An Application for Maintaining Optical Networks

Communications are in the essence of modern technology and thus provide the leverage for modern welfare. Every day we communicate through various types of channels to access data or gain information. With the exponential growth of the networks, keeping the entire world connected has been proved to be a difficult task. Without any doubt, major technologies for providing the service are based on fiber optics – because of their reliability, low attenuation, safety, size and bandwidth. Optical networks are growing in size and complexity, and because of the cost of deploying an optical network, there must be high utilization of resources. In this article we propose a web-based system that will help to manage and expand (primarily) an optical based network. It tackles the difficult problem of combining different needs of various types of optical networks, from creating new end offices, supervising connections, storing the capacities of deployed infrastructure to geographically positioning the network on a map. It exploits different standards and methodologies for network design and implementation. Although the primary goal is managing the complexity of an optical network, the system provides a support for maintaining and developing non-optical wired networks. The software utilizes modern standards and technologies. It is modeled to be expandable for future requests. The main components include modules for handling the complexity of the problem, persistent database storage and a geospatial component for better visualization of the deployed network.
